Ave verum corpus Hail, true body

natum de Maria Virgine born of the Virgin Mary

Vere passum immolatum Who truly suffered sacrifice

in Cruce pro homine on the cross for man,

Cujus latus perforatum From whose pierced side

fluxit aqua et sanguine flowed blood and water.

Esto nobis praegustatum before us as a foretaste

in mortis examine. Of the taste of death.

                                            Sacris solemnis juncta sint gaudia,
                                            et ex praecordiis sonent praeconia;
                                            recedant vetera, nova sint omnia,
                                            corda, voces, et opera.

                                   With these sacred and solemn rites,
                                   let our joy be blended, and
                                   let the songs of praise resound
                                   from our inmost heart;
                                   let ancient symbols depart,
                                   let everything be new,
                                   our hearts, our voices, and our works.

Jam lucis orto sidere.
(From the Parisian Breviary.) [Note]

NOW that the day-star glimmers bright,
We suppliantly pray
That He, the uncreated Light,
May guide us on our way.

No sinful word, nor deed of wrong,
Nor thoughts that idly rove;
But simple truth be on our tongue,
And in our hearts be love.

And, while the hours in order flow,
O Christ, securely fence
Our gates, beleaguer'd by the foe,—
The gate of every sense. {244}

And grant that to Thine honour, Lord,
Our daily toil may tend;
That we begin it at Thy word,
And in Thy blessing end.

And, lest the flesh in its excess
Should lord it o'er the soul,
Let taming abstinence repress
The rebel, and control.

To God the Father glory be,
And to His Only Son,
And to the Spirit, One and Three,
While endless ages run.

O SACRUM convivium,                         O SACRED banquet,
in quo Christus sumitur:                       in which Christ is received,
recolitur memoria passionis eius;         the memory of His Passion is renewed,
mens impletur gratia                          the mind is filled with grace,
et futurae gloriae nobis pignus datur.   and a pledge of future glory given to us.
